You Ji Jia Chuan Duck Rice (友记家传鸭饭), TWG and Pastamania Trip

It is Deepavali Day on Tuesday (13 November 2012) which means it is a public holiday in Singapore. Both Rachel and I plan to go out for a relaxing windows shopping and dining together for the day. Our first stop for lunch is decided to be over at Bugis for duck rice as recommended by one of her friends and the place is actually a stall inside a coffeeshop opposite of Bugis Junction.

When I saw the stall, I remembered that there should be other branch inside foodcourt (Other places) which looks something like this stall too. Anyway since it is a coffeeshop kind of stall, there are no air conditioning and it is all depends on whether it is very hot and humid during the time you are there.

When we are there, it is around 11plus so it is quite hot already and we are seated near to the road side which somehow there are not much wind too.

Specialty Duck Rice @ $4.00: They give very little and small pieces of Duck meat. Big difference between signboard picture and the served dish.

Both of us ordered the Specialty Duck Rice set which consist of egg, peanuts, beancurd, preserved vegetables, Duck meat slices and their duck rice. As you can see from the photo, the portion given are very little though the duck meat is soft and tender, and I like their rice together with their soup too. Peanut and egg seems normal though I think the beancurd is not so good. The preserved vegetables is nice to eat. If they are not stingy with their stuff, I think it is a very nice place to go for a meal.

After finishing our meals, we walk around bugis area (Went over to Sim Lim Square for a while too) and decided to go for a drink of tea. Then I thought of going TWG for tea since we have always been thinking of going there to relax over a cup of tea and their dessert. (Good for both of us since we like to relax rather than rushing or walking around aimlessly.)

So in the end, we ended up at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) where we know there is TWG cafe over there and the environment is nice too. There are 2 different area of TWG in MBS (One like a bridge where boat seated with tourists row pass it while the other is at one of the corner of the river). We choose the one at the corner of the river one as there are not much people and seems relaxing place to be at.

The entrance of the cafe looks very cozy and grand (no wonder it is like higher class of tea drinking) with their staff waiting at the entrance to greet any customer who is coming for tea.

A look over their menu will actually surprised me as there are so many different types of tea to choose from over here and all of them looks so special. Their dessert range is also very nice (They provide main course too) which I would want to order one of each to try out if I have the stomach to eat it (Also if got enough spare $$).

Price range is ofcourse quite on the high side but for the macaroons, it seems to be cheaper than those that I had eaten so far.

I ordered Earl Grey Pu-Erh (T3009) @ $11.00 from the Yunnan – Matured Tea range while Rachel ordered Kukicha (T806) @ $12.00 from the Japan Range.

Kukicha (T806) @ $12.00 from the Japan Range

I choose the wrong selection as the mixture of Earl Grey and Pu-Erh really taste like those chinese medicine which I do not really like it. Rachel on the other hand was luckier as she ordered quite a nice and refreshing one with a bit of mint aftertaste.

One important thing to note over here is that TWG do not provide refill of water for your tea and you can only fill up around 3 cups of tea (Estimation) and you might need to order another tea again. (I saw them sometimes pour out some ready made tea before serving to customers.)

In the end, we ordered another tea called “Gnawa Tea” (T6022) @ $11.00 from the Exclusive Tea Blends range but Rachel do not really like the taste of it too (She prefer the one she ordered earlier.)

TWG Tea Macarons on the other hand is very good. (Great for those sweet tooth people) and I ordered 5 of them to share with Rachel namely (@ $2.00 each):

  • Camelot Tea & Praline
  • Earl Grey Fortune & Chocolate
  • Lemon Bush Tea
  • Grand Wedding Tea, Passion Fruit & Coconut
  • 1837 Black Tea & Blackcurrant

All of them taste sweet and nice to me but I would prefer the lemon Bush Tea more since it is a bit sour sweet type of dessert.

“Pastry of the Day” @ $9.50

We also order their “Pastry of the Day” @ $9.50 which really wow my taste bud as it is really nice (warning as it is very sweet and should goes with bitter tea). This French confection is very creamy and nice but unable to eat it all alone as it will be too sweet to handle. Best to share between at least 2 person.

We stayed over there for a few hours before decided to move our buttock to go for some walk around MBS and we came across this showcase of Rain Oculus (By Ned Kahn) which stated to have 6,000 gallons of water flowing per minute though the Oculus.

It is already in the evening by then and we decided not to have dinner at MBS and thought of going back to Woodlands Causeway Point for dinner before going back home since we still need to go back to work the following day.

Video version of this show:

In the end, we ended up at Pastamania for dinner as we have not been eating pasta for quite a while and wanna try it since we do not feel very hungry after our tea break.

DSC04893 DSC04890 DSC04889

There are quite a lot of people eating at Pastamania and we are lucky to be able to find a table without much effort (With the help of the staff).

We look through the menu and started to go order our food (This is self queuing to order for food while they will serve the pasta to you once it is done).

DSC04883
Caesar Salad @ $5.20

The Caesar Salad is fresh with bacon bits on top of it. we added in a little bit of the salad cream as we do not really like too much cream on our salad for healthy purpose.

DSC04884
Turkey Bacon Aglio @ $8.30

This is one dish which I will always order as it is quite healthy and easy to eat to me. Taste wise is great too as I like it simple with lots of Parmesan cheese.

DSC04887
Dory Zuppa @ $7.90

This is a soup version of Pasta which Rachel ordered as she too do not wish to eat too creamy or thick tomato base pasta but I do not really like this type of soup based pasta though.

One of our dish is added as a set (Combo C of Drink and Garlic Bread) with upgrade of their drinks to Apple Mint (Original @ $4.20) to share between the 2 of us.

  1. I used to eat duck noodles (or kway teow?) ard year 2003-2004 ard midnite at this duck rice stall. Abt $2.50 or $3.00 for a plate. Gizzard was 50 cents per pc.. Wonder if that stall selling chrysanthemum/ginseng tea at $1.20 per glass is stll there…

    • Hi Teo,
      Thanks for viewing my blog.

I believe the coffeeshop drinks stall will still be selling the chrysanthemum / Ginseng Tea but in terms of pricing, it will sure be more than $1.20 per glass if I am not wrong.
